Have you ever started eating a snack bar, taken a couple of bites, then noticed all you had left was an empty packet in your hand? Or been driving somewhere and arrived at your destination only to realise you remember nothing about your journey? Most people have! These are common examples of "mindlessness," or "going on automatic pilot." In our modern, busy lives, we constantly multi task and it’s easy to lose awareness of the present moment as we become lost in a multitude of conflicting demands.

Mindfulness is a way of paying proper attention to whatever is happening in our lives. According to Jon Kabat-Zinn, one of the founders of the movement, it means “paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment and nonjudgmentally.”

Mindfulness can be particularly important at work. Research has shown that office workers are interrupted or self-interrupt every three minutes during the day, with distractions coming in both digital and human form.

Harvard Business School now runs mindfulness courses showing people techniques to help them focus on the task at hand and recognize and release internal and external distractions as they arise. In this way, mindfulness helps increase effectiveness, decrease mistakes, and even enhance creativity.

A mindfulness workshop can be an unusual and positive addition to a conference agenda giving attendees the opportunity to both reflect and re focus on the content of the day and also providing them with some valuables tools to take back to the work place. Just give us a call to discuss.
